I submitted this photo in response to Unión Centroamericana (UNICA) at UCLA’s call to artists for work that speaks to culture, migration, resistance, identity, and community. Esperanza in front of “the lips”, an iconic landmark beloved for its ever changing lip colors (and occasional piercings) made possible by community members, holding a can of America’s Finest red spray paint. The intention is to highlight the faceless communities responsible for everyday art, labor, food, and music and subvert the expectation of what it means to be “America’s Finest”.
